Gang Shi (Tsinghua University, China)

Brief Biography

Dr. Gang Shi is Full Professor of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University, China. His research field is about steel structures, including High Strength Steel Structures, Steel Structural Connections, Seismic Behavior of Steel Structures, Fatigue and Fracture of Steel Structures, Strengthening and Retrofitting of Steel Structures, High Performance Steel Structures with the Combination of Different Steels. He has worked in Delft University of Technology as a postdoctoral senior research fellow, in the University of New South Wales as a visiting academic, in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a postdoctoral fellow, in Katholieke University Leuven as visiting fellow, and in Kyoto University as visiting professor. He is recognized as a leader in the field of High Strength Steel Structures.

Dr. Gang Shi has authored/co-authored 2 books and more than 200 papers including 60 peer reviewed international journal papers. He has got more than 10 research awards from the government for his outstanding achievements. He is also the recipient of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science(JSPS) invitation fellow award, Most Cited Chinese Researchers Award for the consecutive 5 years 2014~2018. Dr. Gang Shi is the chief-editor in charge of 2 design specifications of China and the committee member of more than 15 Chinese design specifications and codes. He is also Editorial Board Member of 3 peer reviewed international journals, and committee member of several associations about steel structures.

Recent Research Advances and Design Code of High Strength Steel Structures in China

Abstract

The high strength steel (HSS) structure has become an important tendency of steel constructions with increased engineering applications in recent years. In order to provide design guidelines, a series of investigations on HSS structures have been conducted in China. This report comprehensively reviewed the investigations on HSS structures in Tsinghua University. The recent research advances on HSS structures, e.g. the material properties for design, the constitutive model for numerical analysis, the properties of connections, the performances of beam-to-column joints and the seismic behaviors of structural frames, were introduced in detail. According to the existing investigations, the mechanical properties, the failure modes and the seismic behaviors of HSS structure would be quite different with ordinary strength steel structures, so the existing design codes for ordinary strength steel structures need to be updated to guide the design of HSS structures. Therefore, a newly-drawn specification in China, named “standard for design of high strength steel structures”, have been coded and prepared for approval. The specifications in this code, including guidelines for material indexes, member check and connection design, were also introduced.

Yonkyun Song(POSCO, Korea)

Brief Biography

Dr. Song has been working for POSCO since 1989. He earned Ph.D. Degree in 2005(Material Science, University of Southern California). His main research interests are corrosion of bare and coated steel and application of giga grade (>980 MPa) steel. He has more than 6 international patent (inventor/co-inventor) and has published over 15 research papers in academic journal. He has presented more than 20 technical results in international conference. He worked as the head/leader of surface treatment research group, steel performance research group and gigasteel surface modification team. Recently, he is doing research on the life-time prediction of steel in automotive and construction site. Steel structure must be degraded by environmental and/or internal factors steel itself. Corrosion and hydrogen could be a critical factors to predict the steel construction. Especially, hydrogen embrittlement has become to be a main issue for keeping sustainability of steel construction.

Manufacturing and Application Issues of Giga Steel

Abstract

Advanced High Strength Steel (>980Mpa) has been used for automotive and construction industry since 2000s. Giga Steel is a brand name of POSCO for AHSS grade steel. In terms of material engineering, ultimate tensile strength and elongation of steel is controversial performance of each other. Many efforts has been done to get both performance (high tensile strength and enhanced elongation). In this presentation, technical issue of manufacturing process of Giga Steel and its application for automotive and construction industry will be discussed. Giga grade steel is sensitive to the hydrogen embrittlement. Many researchers pay attention to how to guarantee the life time in real environment.
